“I would therefore propose, as a very first definition of critique, this general characterization: the art of not being governed quite so much.” (Michel Foucault, “What is Critique?”, 1978)

“Whatever virtue Foucault here circumscribes for us will have to do with objecting to that imposition of power, to its costs, to the way in which it is administered, to those who do that administering.” (Judith Butler, “What is Critique?”, 2000)

“Critique is not a re-action of re-sentment, but rather the active expression of an active mode of existence.”
(Gilles Deleuze, “Nietzsche and Philosophy”, 1962)

What is critique? It is certainly not simply a practice of judging, much less of condemning. It may be that these kinds of reactive, abbreviated forms of “critique” charged with resentment are still being preached from the pulpits of academic teaching and announced from within the bunkers of art criticism, a practice that is perhaps even stronger than ever. In a contemporary concept of critique, however, it can no longer be a matter of a more or less rigorous yes or no to a certain object.
Approaching the end of our three-year project transform, in which we have especially investigated from 2005 to 2008 more recent practices of institutional critique, we want to expand our perspective once again to this kind of contemporary concept of critique. We do not pose the question of the quality of critique unreflectedly along the classical gestures of the negation and rejection of power and the institutional on the one hand, and the “corrective” neutralizing reintegration of critique into the institutional apparatuses on the other. It has become a question of a critique that is not carried out primarily through taking a distance from judgment, but rather through a practice that has always already been involved in what is criticized. And at the same time, it has become a question of an affirmation that no longer means complicity with that which is given, but rather the actualization of social potentials that develop a differential and sometimes subversive knowledge.
In the contributions to the conference we want to equally problematize the meanings of critique that have been developed for centuries, for instance as a capacity for distinction, a critical attitude or a practical critical activity, as well as new forms and concepts of critique as atopical critique, embodied critique, counter-hegemonial intervention, resistance or exodus.

---

(Michel Foucault, „Was ist Kritik?“, 1978)

Was ist Kritik?
